Exhibition Temps mort, a proposal by Clémence Carel. From 4 to 13 September, 2025.
Everything's going too fast, everything's accelerating, down with post-post-postmodern capitalism that extracts value from our individual time, and so on. We seem to suffer life's events more than we control them. So, does going to see an exhibition really allow us to slow down?
If legend has it that the artist is the one who still knows how to take the time to create, the viewer's time conceals other mysteries. According to Merleau-Ponty, the power of the artist makes vision last. We never finish seeing, reaching out to the world, being absent from ourselves, in order to encounter the work. Perhaps this moment of “dead time”, out of the common utility, is rather a time of life.
Even before this inner confrontation, we need to get into the position of the viewer. Today, the history of tastes is called into question, and the objectivity of beauty is no longer relevant. Curiosity is becoming ever more personal; our cultural wanderings and our time given over to art appear as a free choice.
Do we take the time to appreciate art ? Do we take it ? At the end of the day, are we masters of the time we take to experience a work of art ?
We propose a space with variable temporalities. The artists invite the visitor to question their own behavior as they physically experience the works. The creations punctuate the beating of the eyelids, demanding twists and turns. Illusion and imitation are reflected in each other, and poetry soars towards infinity. To love first, the time of one's gaze.
