The result of a month-and-a-half residency, ÆQUO is the first duo show inside Double Séjour’s project space at POUSH. Clédia Fourniau and Louis Jacquot, the two resident artists, have taken over the premises in early December to turn them into their playground!

When he named the Homo sapiens (knowledgeable man), Carl von Linné ignored two substantial parts of our identities, which were noted later. First, our relationship to making, both construction and fabrication, both the result and the tool, the Homo faber (man the maker). But there is another crucial part of our beings, only recently brought to the fore by Dutch historian Johan Huizinga, which governs our relationship to others and to society, the Homo ludens. So we are the man who knows, the man who makes, the man who plays.

« The arena, the card-table, the magic circle, the temple, the stage, the screen, the tennis court, the court of justice, etc., are all in form and function play-grounds, i.e. forbidden spots, isolated, hedged round, hallowed, within which special rules obtain. All are temporary worlds within the ordinary world,. dedicated to the performance of an act apart.»¹

Play is an action that takes place in determined spatial and temporal limits. Double Séjour’s project space defines the place. Clédia Fourniau and Louis Jacquot have established its rules: the role of the gesture, this fleeting sensation of spontaneity, as well as the relationship to chemical matter, shiny, soft or fluffy. From the page of a sketchbook to this canvas coated with gesso and the space’s untouched walls; one just had to play with the echoes to this in situ fabrication stage, where the pieces provoke each other and take the space with them.

Æquo is a game in progress, or the strategist’s last combination.
